Tarbela Dam is one of the best fresh water fishing spots I have ever seen in Punjab/NWFP. Dam is located about 50 km (31 miles) northwest of Islamabad found on the Indus River in Northern Pakistan, It is the largest earth-filled dam in the world. The source of the Indus River is glacial meltwater from the Himalayas. Its reservoir is spread over 95 sq miles which makes it the largest earth filled dam in the world.
Main fishing season for Mahsher starts from April when water level starts rising in the lake and it remains upto September till water level starts decreasing. It is best to go to the river which is not very far from the reservior for catching big Mahsheer.
There are three popular routes leading to Terbela, i.e. 1) Motoway; Burhan/Hasanabad 2) Taxila Meusim/Khanpur/Haripur 3) Wah/Hassanabad/Haripur. It would be best to use Motorway and exit from Burhan and go via Hasanabdal as the other routes are very bad due to road construction these days. Just reaching Haripur as some one as from main bazar you will have to turn left.
Don't forget to catch some Luria/chilwa from the river called Doar. You can also find luria from small natural canal just after crossing Haripur. Use a 12 to 20 Pound line and two piece or telescopic rod of 8-9 feet. Landing net is a must otherwise you will lose your big catch.
Tarbela is one of the main spots where anglers can still able to catch Mahsher beside Rahu, China Carp, Silver Carp, Snake Head and Eels which are in abandace there. As per my knowledge the biggest Mahsher hooked from Tarbela lake was 55 Lbs. About 10 years back I caught a 16 Lbs China Carp. PGFA member Mobeen Siddiqi has caught 13 Lbs Snake Head on 1.5.2009 which is a record. He has also caught a 7 pounder Snake head but the date is not confirmed.
There are many fishing spots but I perfer to go to the area called Bheer where you can catch each variety of species.
